series of sound installations

2 persons leaning into a pile of rooftiles

Sonic Possible Worlds, Salomé Voegelin, p. 12

With Johannes Bellinkx I developed a series of seven site specific sound installations along a route near Fredrikstad (NO). By listening intensely to the landscape and in a later stage recording it, I created seven multi-channel compositions that can be considered dialogues with the landscape. A landscape that consists of a waste processing site next to a fjord. During the stroll along the installation the spectator is invited to lean into unconventional perspectives and listen to sounds that defy human borders.

The installations feature two listening spots where the hiking spectators can experience the compositions together. Four resonance speakers within the installation create both sonic and physical sensations, while four passive speakers concealed in the surrounding landscape blend their mimicking, synthesized sounds with the natural soundscape. LiDAR sensors mounted inside the installation's hood detect human presence, ensuring the composition plays only when visitors are nearby and gently fades as they depart.
